French writer Stendhal (born January 23, 1783) loved a good pseudonym. He was born Marie-Henri Beyle, but published only one book—The History of Painting—under that name. His other pen names included Louis Alexandre Bombet, Anastasius Serpiere, and M. de Stendhal, officier de cavalerie.
